7 Years to Home

On the mind.

Told you all I’d go silent for a little while. I thought it might be a few posts, but it’s been two months since my last newsletter. Wanted to share this Instagram post I wrote with all of you!

7 years ago, to the day, we packed up all our belongings and moved from Chico, CA to Seattle, WA. This was the start of our journey to find home! Chico was the last place I lived that truly felt like home — it became more of a home to me than the actual hometown I grew up in.

But we left Chico for good reasons and thought Seattle could be the place we were looking for. Max was 2-weeks old when we left Chico, and since then, we’ve bought, sold, and lived in 9 different homes by the time Max turned 6 (this year). 9 homes!!! That’s a new home on average every 8-ish months. One of those homes was a one-bedroom investment that Max, Kristin, and I lived in for about seven months, and another was our dream Bend house that we spent over three years customer building before selling it. We invested in homes, but along the journey, we were really searching for our home and community to raise our family. We moved to Oahu after Seattle, then Kauai, then Bend, and finally back to Kauai full-time! It’s beeeeen a journey, but one I’m grateful for because we took chances, made tough decisions, and ultimately found our place.

During that time, we had our second son, Kai, and our daughter, Lillian! All three kids were born in different states > California (Max), Washington (Kai), and Hawaii (Lillian).

It took 7 years, but we finally found our place: Kauai. The last 7 years have been fast-paced, but they haven’t felt fast, they’ve felt full. A lot of growth and learning has happened.

Living on Kauai honestly feels like a dream every day. The community, the beauty of this place, how much happier we are, and the energy of the island has captured us deep to the core. It’s home, and we’re excited to keep growing our roots here on the ‘āina.
