Back on Kauai

On the mind.

We arrived this week back on the island we used to live on, the island of Kauai. An island that changed me for the better, a place of joy for our family, and the place where our daughter, Lillian, was born.
Kauai feels like home.
We know the island intimately, and on our first day back, we ran into so many familiar faces/friends. I think this might be my favorite place on earth.
It’s our first time back since we moved, and we’ll be here for a few weeks—to visit friends, catch some waves, take a small break from the crisp winter cold, and live the aloha life.
Three Fun Facts About Kauai
1. Kauai Has More Miles of Beaches Than Any Other Hawaiian Island: Despite being one of the smallest main Hawaiian Islands, Kauai has more beaches per mile of coastline than any other island in Hawaii. A bonus to this is if you’ve traveled to other Hawaiian islands, you know the beaches can get busy, but here, it’s easy to find a beach with just a handful of other people on it (or no one at all).
2. No Building Can Be Taller Than a Coconut Tree: Kauai has a law that says no building can be taller than a coconut tree (about four stories max). That’s why you won’t see any high-rises here. Just wide-open views, natural beauty, and that perfect small-town island vibe.
3. Kauai Has a Forbidden Island: Just off the coast of Kauai is an island called Niʻihau, aka “The Forbidden Island.” It’s privately owned, and only a handful of outsiders (mostly invited guests, military personnel, and conservationists) are ever allowed to visit. The people who live there still speak Hawaiian and live largely off the land—almost like stepping back in time.

Back with my surfboard. It’s ugly, it’s foam but I missed it!
