Three Things I Look for When Hiring

By the time I’m interviewing someone, their competency and ability to do the job have already been evaluated. The ability to do the job is really important, but after that, these are the top three things I focus on during the a final round interview with me:

1. Are they a good person? This is the most important thing to me and something I try to tease out throughout the interview. Good people do what’s right. They’re guided by integrity, kindness, and genuinely care for others. A good person isn’t perfect; they’re humble and willing to learn. If they’re not a good person, nothing else matters.

2. Does the conversation feel real? Within minutes, I can usually tell whether or not they’ll be a good fit. It’s a gut feeling: are they being themselves, and does the conversation feel real and natural? Any sway in that feeling, and it’s usually a no from me.

3. Character for our culture. Is the person honest? Are they being true to themselves, or just telling me what they think I want to hear? What drives them as a person? What gets them up in the morning? Walk me through a normal day for you? These are the questions I dive into because we want people who work hard, enjoy what they do, and embody all the other values that make up the culture of White Rabbit Group. I don’t believe there’s a one-size-fits-all company culture and hiring in alignment with your culture’s beliefs is critical. Not a fit, they’re not getting in.
