The Weekly No. 4

My Daily Routine & A Big Hire

On the mind.

My daily routine.

I’ve interviewed hundreds of people over the years. I care so much about the people we hire that I personally conducted the final interview with every new hire during the first five years of founding White Rabbit Group. Our team performs most of our hiring now, but I still conduct final round interviews for key hires – for us, that’s project managers and director-level positions.

The funny thing is, you’re meeting a complete stranger, and within 60-minutes, you need to figure out if they will be a good fit for the role, our company culture, and overall, if they’re just a good human. It’s pretty wild if you think about it. So, I’ve tailored my interview questions over the years, and one of the questions I ask everyone is:

“Walk me through a normal day for you, from what time you wake up to what time do you go to sleep?”

I ask this question and I instantly get a really good glimpse into their life. But what’s my daily routine like?

So, today, I wanted to share my daily routine with you. Below is what a typical Monday looks like for me.

  • 6:00 am: Wake up! No phone yet, but I do glance at my calendar to make sure I know what’s going on that morning. I also check my Garmin sleep score.

  • 6:00 - 6:30 am: Morning wake-up routine: brush teeth, wash face, put on contacts, and take morning supplements (AG1, a very small dose of creatine, and collagen mixed in water). Start coffee machine if not already started by Kristin.

  • 6:30 - 7:00 am: Do a quick stretch in the gym. By 7 am, I am on the computer working.

  • 7:00 - 9:00 am: Coffee, breakfast, and work. I wait at least an hour after waking up before I start drinking coffee and eating breakfast. This early morning block is a little more scattered, with work moving slower. I have meetings, check Morning Brew, read through Slack, clean the inbox, glance at my to-do list, and get small tasks done. With breakfast and coffee, I take the next round of supplements: omegas, MBD Brain Guard+, and a tablespoon of olive oil.

  • 9:00 am - 12:00 pm: Continued work but with more focus. I call this deep focus work. I also have meetings during this window as needed. Almost ritually, I take a 15-minute break during this window to get out into the sun.

  • 12:00 - 1:00 pm: I try to take a 30-minute lunch break, but many days (maybe 50%) I’m eating lunch in front of the computer… Hey, I like what I do! 😄

  • 1:00 - 3:30 pm: Wrap up work. More deep-focused work and meetings. I try to wrap up by 3 pm, but some days spill over. I’ll take final supplements during this window: MBD Brain Guard+ and Codeage Liposomal Vitamin C+.

  • 3:00 - 4:30 pm: Workout. Monday is full-body workout day. Over the last month, I’ve been doing my own mini Murph: 1-mile run with a 20lb weighted vest, 50 pull-ups (no vest), 100 push-ups (with vest), 150 squats (with vest), finishing with a 1-mile run (with vest).

  • 4:30 - 6:00 pm: Family time! I work from home, so I get to see my family a lot throughout the day, but this time block is fully dedicated to them. We go on bike rides, hop in the hot tub, do a cold plunge (the kids stand in it), go on walks, we have movie nights once a week, Kristin is prepping dinner, etc.

  • 6:00 - 7:00 pm: Dinner with the family. We always eat dinner together as a family. Typically, we eat at home and eat healthily, but we also go out at least once a week as a family for dinner.

  • 7:00 - 9:00 pm: We have three young kids, so it’s bedtime routine for them: get ready for bed, pajamas, read books, tell stories, and get them to sleep. They’re asleep by 8/8:30 pm, and then I typically just get ready for bed myself. If it’s movie night (every Tuesday night), the movie spills into this time block.

  • 9:30 pm: I’m in bed by 9:30 pm almost routinely. Sleep is important, and I consistently get eight hours of sleep or more each night. I’m not reading right now, I don’t look at my phone, I just lay down with my thoughts and go to bed. Sometimes (less frequently now), I’ll do a 20-minute Shakti mat session. Kristin does the Shakti mat more than me right now.

This is what most days look like during the week, and I’m executing this routine almost to a T four days a week.

Random thoughts as I was typing this out:

  • My wife and I have Thursday night date nights, which have been awesome!

  • My shower is daily but sporadic. One of my previous set routines, like most people, was taking a shower each day at a specific time. Nowadays, though, I’m working out in the afternoon, we hop in the hot tub, I might do a cold plunge, etc. Thus, sometimes I take a shower in the morning, but most days, I’m taking it quickly in the late afternoon after a workout.

  • Breakfast and lunch: I typically eat breakfast and lunch at the computer. Breakfast is almost always at the computer. Lunch is about 50% at the computer and 50% taking a break and/or eating with the family.

  • My workouts are different each day. Tuesday afternoons are “get outside days” with the family or solo – like mountain biking or a run. I’ve been running with my wife, Kristin, on Wednesday afternoons. On Fridays, I try to get in a long run.

  • Water is important! I drink roughly 75-100 ounces of water a day.

  • I try not to look at my phone until 7 am and try to turn it off by 7 pm.

I change it up each day, but my work schedule throughout the week is the most consistent, roughly 6:45 am - 3:00 pm. I work a little earlier than I used to, but I get more of an afternoon with the family or a workout.

I’ve been perfecting this routine for years, and currently, I am very happy and feel that I have a solid balance in mood, quality time with the family, the ability to execute on work, stay connected with friends, and overall maintain the life I want to live.

Huge shoutout to my wife, Kristin, who manages the other side of our life. I couldn’t do what I do without her. We both balance this life we have, and it’s pretty awesome.

One pic.

This past week was really special. For the first time, Abhilash (my co-founder of WRG) and I got our families together! We spent the 4th of July weekend with his wife, Prathibha, and son, Madhav, and we had a blast.

Thanks for following along!
